Downdraft is fantastic

Submitted by Happy Housewife - 7/13/2017

Love the KitchenAid downdraft. For 30 years I have had an upper cabinet blocking the view to my family room. With the remodel I didn't want a range hood hanging down so we discovered the downdraft system. What a blessing. Press a button and it pops up and starts removing the steam from the cooktop. What a wonderful discovery! So glad we found it.

Looks great but....

Submitted by Jammies - 6/12/2017

So we purchased this brand new and have used it, not everyday, but for the past 4-6 weeks. We're trying to be good by keeping the filters clean. The last time we took them out, the downdraft descended on its own. No where in the manual does it tell you how to troubleshoot an occurence like that. We called kitchenaid and they sent out a technician. He tried all he could by checking the breaker, and unplugged the unit to get it ro reset. Nothing happened. He in turn ordered a bunch of parts in anticipation of replacing. This was on Saturday, we're waiting for the parts to come in. Like I stated earlier, this was brand new. This shouldn't be happening already. If anything, I should be thrilled it's still under warranty. I hope whatever the technician does, we will never have issues again for at least 10 years!

Looks cool but not reliable

Submitted by Geronimo - 3/8/2017

Mostly works but had an issue or two, the first fixed under warranty in the first year, the second I recently heard from the repair company the these things are junk. It's a 1.5-2 hour job to remove it and replace the switch that frequently fails. In short, the wow factor is there but the quality/reliability is not.

Submitted by Lynn - 3/1/2017

Worked just OK for the most part on high which is very, very loud. Always had to help "lift" the unit to the upright position since day one. Was cleaning it today and pulled the filters when the unit closed on me and I cannot get it to raise back up. Of course it's out of warranty. Would NOT recommend to others.

Good Purchase

Submitted by Elk Watcher - 2/15/2017

A definite improvement over my 26 year old builder-installed KitchenAid downdraft system. Sleek looks and MUCH quieter. Not sure any of these downdraft systems are a true replacement for actual vent hoods, but given my kitchen configuration it's all I can have.

36' Retractable Downdraft System 600 CFM

Submitted by RC - 2/6/2017

When we opted for an electric cooktop in our new house, we were not aware it came with the downdraft system. But we're very happy with the exhaust system - vents down and out so there are no overhead intrusions. Three speeds, quickly raises and lowers. Relatively quiet - same as an overhead system. We'd do it again!

Less than thrilled

Submitted by Dpeters - 1/13/2017

You must always push the button twice to make the unit rise and sometimes three times to make it retract. Not sure why this is. Also the fan is very noisy and doesn't move enough air if you are cooking on the "burners" that are not right beneath the exhaust.

Lousy Brand

Submitted by Football Mom - 1/3/2017

I just remodeled my kitchen 18 months ago and purchased ALL kitchenAid applicances stainless Steel. The fridge is rusting and seal is breaking ($2500 purchase) which KitchenAid refuses to do anything about. The downdraft is rusting which is causing it to get stuck and not automatically raise and lower. It started rusting within 9 months of use. This brand is junk and over priced. KitchenAid does not support their products. I will never recommend or purchase this brand.

Submitted by Shrink42020 - 10/22/2016

Absolutely great-I could not be more pleased! I love the height because if I am using a tall stockpot the vent is still higher than the pot and vents wonderfully! The majority of my appliances are KitchenAid and I have been very pleased with them all!

Thermador Replacement...

Submitted by Disappointed - 10/15/2016

Came severely damaged, even had trash inside the unit. Had to call and knock heads at PacSales to get it replaced. Appeared to be damaged and used. The continuing nightmare with all "new" Kitchenaid appliances bought from Pacific Sales. The second one appears to be ok, holding my breath. Seems tinny and cheaply made. Very Noisy. If I didn't have to have this type of blower, I'd not do this again. Or I would have gotten the Thermador that I had originally.

Retractable mistake

Submitted by Homeowner - 10/14/2016

Installed this unit three years ago with nothing but failure. Had 6 repair visits from three companies - finally just disconnected the unit for safety as non repairable. There seems (to me) a design issue with the switches. The final response from KitchenAid was an offer to remove the unit and give us $1000 (less than the cost of a new unit and no recovery of the insurance we have been keeping) - and not even an apology. We have a custom installation that will only take this unit - alternative was to redo alll counters or replace it with the same (terrible) product. We chose to put another one in and keep paying extended warranties. Avoid this unit!

Strong downdraft

Submitted by Gasmom217 - 9/16/2016

This was purchased for a kitchen remodel where we replaced our 20 yr old kitchen and all of its appliances. We had a Thermador radiant glass cooktop with a down draft vent and really liked it, but we decided to go with all KitchenAid appliances (except a Sub Zero refrigerator purchased at a great end of season sale). This downdraft is extra tall, it has multiple speeds. It can be left on so that when it is raised up, it automatically comes on at the preset speed. It works great, cleans easily. The only negative, which is why I give it four stars, is that it just doesn't look or feel as well made as what I anticipated. Every other KitchenAid appliance that we purchased had a much higher quality appearance overall. Overall, not a big deal since most of the time it is out of sight.

Broken TWICE in less than 18 months

Submitted by RL - 9/13/2016

We purchased this new 2/2015. We hardly cook we just like this product for it's looks and matches all our other SS kitchenaid appliances. Thought it was a cool system how it can hide itself away when not being used. Well this unit quit working around 1/2016, just right before the warranty expired. We called KA customer service and was able to arrange repair. The whole repair process took TWO MONTHS. First they ordered parts, waited on the parts, and came back for repair when parts came in. Ooops, they ordered wrong parts. Then they ordered MORE parts and told us everything on back order for weeks. Finally got through the repair process and unit worked like new. Well that lasted less than six months. Just found out tonight that the unit quit working again. Does not stay up, vent would not shut off, etc. And now we are out of warranty. We've turned this unit on literally less than 30 times in the year and half we owned this. What a piece of junk and KA should be ashamed of their poor quality.

Does a Good Job

Submitted by AJD - 8/22/2016

I have seen the reviews and looked at them carefully but decided to go ahead and purchase this anyway. I am glad I did. It does a good job, it's a sleek and cool design, plus I don't have an ugly, visually detracting overhead hood to contend with. I put the cooktop in the island and now I can interact with my guests while cooking. The fan has variable speeds to it can evacuate the entire room of smoke if needed, but on a lower setting it does not affect the flames and still does a good job.

Everything Broke But The Sheet Metal

Submitted by Chef Chape - 6/9/2016

This system began failing within two years of being placed into operation. First was the switch. Next was the control board. Next was the retractor motor. Next and finally was the fan. Every sub-component except the sheet metal! Now it seems I have to replace the entire hood and fan system, which will likely run over $2500. KA has offered a similar unit for $800, but with a smaller fan and no installation, of course. That means I'm only out about $3000 or so. This from a premium American manufacturer who does not want to recognize the utter failure of this product. I beg them for help, but they're not interested. DO NOT BUY!!

squeaky, yet powerful

Submitted by LCS - 6/6/2016

Not sure if it's the design, or the poor manufacturing, or the installation, but we are now on our 2nd blower. The seller is definitely at fault for selling us the first one as new, when it clearly was used and damaged. The blower squeals and squeaks going up and down and we hope it will settle down over time. We had no choice but to use this type of design, as that is what we had previously, except we had Thermador. In retrospect, we should have stayed with Thermador, but it is twice as expensive. The blower is powerful and does a good job. Fortunately, Pacific Sales replaced the first one at no cost, but this whole thing has taken at least a month.

Terrible Product - do not buy

Submitted by Frefro - 5/6/2016

Gets dirty quick and designed specifically to force you into service calls. Removed filters to clean and accidentally closed the unit, now its locked in the down position and we need to get service in - of course this happens 1 year and a few days after buying so need to pay for service.

Great but tough installation

Submitted by HollyVikes - 5/3/2016

I haven't had the chance to use it for real yet, since we're still finishing the construction of our house. However, it appears to work great. Not as quiet as I would have liked. But definitely suggest having it professionally installed. It was a pain to installed and takes a lot of space under the counter! We had a foot behind the cabinet and it took most of it and about 6" of the inside cabinet. Be sure you drill holes in the back and side of cabinet and have access to those holes after the countertop installation, because you will have to adjust the height. I know I'm going to love this solution instead of a hood unit in my island but be ready for a long and difficult installation. This is coming from a homeowner that is building their own house and is very handy.

I agree with Gina from Boston, DO NOT PURCHASE

Submitted by MTP - 4/21/2016

Same scenario as Gina, remodel, purchased the downdraft, worked a couple months then the level of venting reduced to the point that it doesn't move steam from boiling water and it also only rises a third of the way out of the counter so we have to pull it the rest of the way. We had it checked out by a service rep under warranty (hired by KitchenAid). KA says it works fine but when on high power, it only measures 75 cc air flow on the meter (KA reported that measure of units falls within the acceptable range and deems the DD functional). KA will not replace the unit nor the motor. KA doesn't seemed bothered that it doesn't rise either. Very disappointed in KA. The distributor we bought it from is appalled by KA service.

Don't know what to think at this point.

Submitted by Rich in name only - - 4/3/2016

Doing a complete kitchen remodel with all Kitchen Aid products. Just had my contractor and electrician install our new cooktop & venting system. Cooktop seems to be working fine but the fan does not rise up. The button only goes down just a fraction of an inch. The electrician thinks the problem is with the button. I really don't know what to think.

Good ventilation for a downdraft

Submitted by Ak - 3/24/2016

I replaced my older appliances (DD, DW, CT and oven) with KA based on brand reputation and user reviews. But I guess not many people are in market for downdrafts. So the options are limited. KA dd pulls out fumes and smoke well at mid to high speeds. But it is very noisy as compared to my older Broan. I would prefer a regulator with consistent speed change rather than 4-5 stage button. Filters are great. They look good and are DW safe. Drawback- it comes on and out with a button on top. which needs to be pressed twice. That's weird. Sometimes I have to press multiple time. This has been like so from day1 when it was installed. "This is how it is with KA" that's what the installed told me. I would not expect something like this from KA. Not that this is a high end DD but it is not cheap either. working so far is smooth. Goes up and down quietly. I am planning to update my reviews later as I use my appliances.

Do NOT Purchase

Submitted by Gina - 2/15/2016

I bought this item as part of a total kitchen redo. I used this item for about 18 months- I purchased in February of 2014 but my kitchen was not completed until July 2014 and able to be utilized. This item now does not work- the unit will not raise up when the button is hit, therefore you cannot turn it on. So I have had this expensive downdraft- over 1100.00 and now it is useless. Kitchen aide only has a year warranty on this and will do nothing for me. I am sorry but a large item like this should not break in 18 months- but kitchen aide says- too bad. I would never recommend this product or purchase another kitchen aide item again!

Submitted by okuser - 3/27/2015

First, install isn't clean. You need a LOT Of space to install it easier. It's difficult to get level so the reveals on the countertop look clean. Second, it broke with just a few uses. The fan has a switch that should turn it OFF when the unit goes down. This stopped working on my unit after about 10-15 uses. To Kitchenaids credit though, they fixed for me under warranty. They had to find a local person to do the repair but were actually great to work with on that part!

Not a toy!

Submitted by Phil Cape Cod - 1/27/2015

This is the second retractable downdraft we have owned. The one we had previously was purchased in 2011 (not a Kitchenaid). Compared to this new Kitchenaid unit, the old one was a toy. This one is more solidly built and moves more air faster and is quieter than our old one.

When it works, it works very well

Submitted by Psi5 - 1/23/2015

When the vent is operating, it is terrific. I was worried about a "downdraft" vent with gas burners so got this one. It extends very high, as high as my tallest stock pot and so vents efficiently without "stealing" heat from the burners. It is not quiet but it is effective. That said, it has been serviced once and replaced once within the first 2 years of ownership. To KA's credit, they covered it even when out of warranty but I cannot rate it higher (and probably should rate it lower) given the reliability issues.

want so much to rate it higher

Submitted by ThomasW - 1/12/2015

I've owned this unit for 5 years, and like the design, 14" height, 600 cfm, and one touch control. However, I am about to replace the control board again. At $350 per board (plus labor), this is high maintenance product. Unforthnately, once you cut granite to fit the vent, its tough to retrofit with something else.

Poorly made

Submitted by Rougean - 1/3/2015

Downdraft is 4 months old and has never been operable. The fan does not automatically turn off when retracted and spontaneously goes up and down. I had to unplug downdraft for safety. The upper trim does not fit properly moving about during operation. The on/off switch is loose and difficult to activate.
